In my special education classroom, my students have a strong desire to learn, despite their various disabilities that can make learning extremely difficult. It is my goal to create an environment that will allow my students to make meaningful progress, building on their strengths and supporting them in improving their areas of need. For many of my students, the simple act of sitting in the classroom during instruction presents great difficulty. In addition to activities that allow my students to be up and moving around the classroom, the flexible seating options that I am requesting will allow them to have a choice in the way they access the curriculum. The wobble chairs allow students to move while sitting during instruction or independent work. These chairs allow students to exercise their legs, back, and abdominal muscles. They allow students to move while sitting down, providing an outlet for restlessness and extra energy, which is great for kids with ADD or ADHD. The chair bands provide students with the opportunity to move their feet while learning, providing sensory input in a discreet manner that will limit distractions. The beanbag seat will provide a comfortable place for students to relax while working or reading. My students will love having all of these different choices, and will feel extremely comfortable in their learning environment. Flexible seating will help students who typically require movement breaks in order to focus. They will be able to get through tasks without getting up to walk around, and they will have constant access to the sensory input that they require.
