Our children are growing up in a fast-paced media based society. Why should they bother to read when everything is available in video form at the touch of a button? Literacy builds key developmental areas in the brain, but how can you teach a child to read if they have no books that engage them or stimulate their curiosity? Low income children, especially, have fewer books in their home and school, so have fewer opportunities to really be "hooked" by a book and learn to love reading.
