Remember the excitement of getting your first paycheck from your first job? Now imagine you were forced to work in the fields as a child in order to help your family. During our teen activism unit, my students made connections with forced child labor as many of them come from families who have worked in the fields for generations. Many of my students spend their summers, breaks, and after school working in the fields to help their families make ends meet. They take pride in their work and their contributions to their families. In addition to migrant families, our school has many students who are refugees from war torn countries and have personal experience with the subject matter. My students were horrified at the images of small children, some as young as 5, as terrorist soldiers. 85% of our school population receives free/reduced lunch and over 50% is Hispanic.
