This year I have the best class I've ever had. My students are eager to learn second graders from low income households. My classroom is 88% African American, 40% are receiving free or reduced price lunches, and 30% are reading below grade level. My school is full of teachers who care a great deal about our students. We use our own money to make sure we have some basic things that our students cannot afford. Many of our teachers put in extra hours to work with students who have come to us functioning below grade level. We work hard to develop positive relationships with our students to lead them toward having positive attitudes toward learning to break the cycle of poverty.
