The 28 students in my first grade class all come from Spanish speaking homes, families, and countries. The Native Speaking program is in place to help the students transition from their native language (Spanish) to their new language (English) by the end of second grade. We do our reading and writing in Spanish and other subjects in English. Many of these children will be the FIRST generation to read and write! All are the first generation of English speakers in their families. I am blessed to be able to teach them! Many of these students have minimal support at home, so the more resources that we can provide for them, the better!
