Great readers and thinkers do a lot of purposeful reading, writing, and discussing. I want all my students to become readers. One way to accomplish this is to give them novels that resonate with their interests and passions. Engaging novels about topics that are relevant to teens make reluctant readers more likely to come to class and listen to the lesson. The key to engaging students in reading is by giving them texts that mirror their life. By reading I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika Sanchez, students will explore contemporary themes that lead them to think about their own identity and mental health. Relatability, interest and beneficial novel themes are a few reasons that my students deserve access to the book this project will fund. I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. Sanchez will help me provide my students with a diverse curriculum. The assignments, analyses and discussions that will come from this novel for year to come are more relatable today than they have ever been. Touching on themes of family, immigrant cultural identity and the self, it is without a doubt that my students will benefit from such a text. Your fulfillment of this project will help me make it a reality.
