My 7th grade students at our Title 1 Middle School largely come from underprivileged backgrounds where the importance of education is often marginalized. This year, I have seen my students slowly become scholars and dedicated learners; however, they are still at a disadvantage. They do not read at grade level and struggle with a challenging curriculum. This causes many of them to become discouraged. They are all eager to learn and have already fallen in love with reading. In only a few short weeks, they have devoured the books we have and want more. We are a new school with limited funding and this is the first year there is a 7th grade. Our resources are limited and our bookshelves are not full with books that will excite and encourage our students to read and become lifelong readers. Our school has gone from one grade level (6th grade) to two grade levels (6th and 7th), but we have not gotten many additional resources. Next year, we will have 8th grade too.
