There is currently only one other indigenous author on the list of books we have access to at my school; my students are in high school, and most have read this book–many of them have read it two or three times–and are scoring more than double the lexile rating of this book. My students need new material that is current, diverse, relevant to their lives, and engaging. We will use this new book to engage students in reading, develop their literary analysis, research, and evidence gathering skills, as well as work on short and long essay written responses. The author is local, the book is set locally, and it will give us the opportunity to discuss how we develop our cultural and personal identities in a rapidly changing world that is vastly different than all of our ancestors.
