Deciding to become a teacher is a passion that I developed over the years while working as a community organizer for immigrant rights. Through the facilitation of forums, and workshops on Know Your Rights and College Access for Undocumented Students, I started to see the power that teaching and education can have within inner-city communities. I learned that education is a fundamental value in grassroots movements because it stimulates people's cognitive, emotional and social development. In addition to seeing the value of education, I mentored students one-on-one as they applied to college, and was able to call upon their unique skills and abilities to help them develop quality and meaningful essays. I realized that educating others was my way of serving my community.
