This scholastic year is my first year teaching fifth grade coming from first grade last year, and I do not have many books for independent reading in my classroom. The books will all be of great resource and I picked books that would be of interest to the group of students that I serve. The book sets are my most wished-for item because then the class or small groups could work on a book study. For example, the book Esperanza Rising is about a girl whose family moves from Mexico to California during the Great Depression. Within that one book, there are several themes that can be used in other teachable moments: immigration, migration, disease, farm laborers, working/living conditions, music, celebrations, customs, food and etc. The students can perform skits, keep reading response journals, or study other historic events referenced in the story to name a few of some of the extensions that the students will work on to further connect to the story. Lastly, the books will help set the framework for rich conversations analyzing the character's decisions in the story based on the setting.
