Every student in our schools needs 21st century knowledge and skills to succeed as effective citizens, workers and leaders in the 21st century. I teach 9th and 12th grade English in a city high school located in a diversely populated part of the country. Students in my classes come in with a wealth of information in their cultural and technological "banks", and are from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. Often times they have not had extensive exposure to good literature. Many of our students' families struggle to make ends meet and the teachers in our school often use their own resources to ensure students are equipped with what they need for school. My teaching style is student centered. I prefer to be the "guide on the side" rather than the "sage on the stage." My goal is to ensure that when students leave my classroom they are more prepared to achieve their future goals.
