My 18 kindergartners were asked to give their favorite types of books and topics of interest. I anticipated their first choice to be fantasy books. Surprisingly, most students favored informational topics from animals to community helpers. They are curious and constantly ask questions about the world around them. Because our field trip funding is limited, we have not had the opportunity to visit the zoo or various places in the community. I want to teach my students they can take a journey anywhere to explore animals and meet various people in the community. Their ticket is a good book! However, when organizing my classroom library by interest levels I noticed I have a limited supply of books (tickets) to help them along this journey. Most of the books that students use for independent reading are on level fantasy books. There are few informational books which they can read independently. More of these type books will guide them on this quest for knowledge.
