The process of pretending builds skills! During pretending or dramatic play, a child is actively experimenting with the social and emotional roles of life. Through cooperative play, a child is learning how to take turns, share responsibility, and creatively problem solve. When a child pretends to be different characters, he has the experience of "walking in someone else's shoes," which helps teach the important moral development skill of empathy. In order to work together in a dramatic play situation, children learn to use language to explain what they are doing. They learn to ask and answer questions and the words they use fit whatever role they are playing. We need an updated play kitchen with toy cookware, a wooden cookie play food set and a sandwich play food set to encourage dramatic play.
