I teach 5th grade at a Title 1 school in Houston, Texas. Most of the students I serve are ELL's (English Language Learners) with low socioenconomic disadvantages. After the last four years of teaching at Jefferson, I continue to see student's eagerness and willingness to learn and achieve greatness. My students face many language barriers especially if he/she is new to learning English. Students are still expected to take standardized testing in English with at times limited experience learning English. I feel when students enter my room it is a place students feel safe, forget home problems and it is a place they learn how to enjoy reading.
