My students come to my K-8 community school from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds. Many speak a language other than English at home and others are the first in their family to attend school in the United States. My students love hearing stories but struggle to read complex texts independently because they have not had the opportunity to practice their reading skills with engaging literature. My school follows the balanced literacy approach to teaching reading. We teach reading skills based on specific genres. Students improve their reading by choosing books that interest them and match their reading level. This innovative model of teaching reading allows for amazing differentiation for every student, which fosters a love of reading. Due to the varied interests and reading levels of the diverse student population my students needs numerous books at various levels so they can all remain engaged.
