Our school is located in North Carolina. Most of our students have a direct connection to one of the military branches. Due to this fact, they move around every two years or so. They students that are not military come from families with very limited economic resources. It is difficult for them to buy a recorder to use at school. The only option is at a $1 store type of place that sells very cheap plastic recorders that are difficult to play correctly and break easily. I have found it far more effective to provide recorders for my students for the duration of the unit and then sanitize them for the next group. The recorders I currently use are getting old and do not match in color, style or tuning. The students use the recorders in class and to play concerts for the school and parents. They thrill in the opportunity to perform. They also gain strength in literacy and math skills by reading music. This raises our test scores and the student's self esteem.
