Recess is a crucial part of the school day that not only provides the students an essential break time for movement and recreation, but also contributes to their social and emotional development. However, many children with autism lack appropriate play skills and may find recess an overwhelming time. Music and movement have been an amazing way for students to connect, and we often have a large group of students gather together around a radio when their favorite songs come on! We would love to have jump ropes, basketballs, and an outdoor speaker loud enough to be heard throughout the playground, along with a microphone to allow them to sing their hearts out-- a great way to work on turn taking or working together! Additionally, we are looking for other recess materials to teach students to engage in group games, or parallel play for those who are still working on early play skills.
