Reading is known to strengthen connections in our brains and build new ones! It also improves vocabulary and language skills, as well as increase concentration. Students who read often also do better in school across all subject areas. An important strategy to create avid readers is providing books that students can see themselves in. The selected books include characters with the same cultural backgrounds and experiences as many of my students. The books include families that many of my students can connect to. These books with diverse characters, families, and experiences will increase student interest in reading. Students will feel affirmed in who they are and gain confidence as they read about characters like them who overcome challenges and find success.
