The cellos that I requested will benefit the Orchestra in a variety ways. The first way is that it will help increase our inventory of quality instruments. Many of our instruments are out dated or are not in the best playing condition. Students are not able to perform with the best tone quality because the instruments are not up to standard. When the Orchestra goes to Music Festival or Large Group Performance Evaluation, we are challenged with the task of playing on instruments that will not stay in tune. We are graded on our performance and it damages our score when our instruments go flat. Our Orchestra is expanding but our budget is contracting. The Fine Arts department in our district has a limited budget to work with. Our Orchestra does not get much of a budget to purchase instruments. Repairs and music must come out of the same budget as equipment. This leaves me with the difficult choice to pick and choose where the money will be best utilized. With 93 students , it is a given that the money must be spent on instruments. Although many of our students play the violin and viola, our fastest growing section is the Cello section. The Cello is one of the most expensive instruments in the Orchestra. One Cello could take up the entire budget. Our students come from low -income neighborhoods. Many of them would like to have their own instrument, but parents are not able to afford a good instrument for them to play. Purchasing a Cello through the Donors Choose Grant would help alleviate our budget crunch and increase our inventory of quality Cellos.
