I teach 2nd grade at a small, rural school. We have approximately 260 students and have qualified as a Title I school times over the last several years. I have been teaching at this school for over 20 years and have noticed an increase in overweight children throughout grade levels. Many of our students are not involved in sports or after school activities. They lack the motivation/education to realize the importance of physical fitness. I have seen students as young as five at our school who are at a weight that would be considered obese. When given the choice out on the playground, these same students choose to swing instead of getting up and moving/walking around.
