My students come from a low socioeconomic area in which many of the adults in their lives cannot or do not read with them at home. In my school, we have adopted a reading program that is a hands-on approach to learning to read using sorting, classifying, and comparing ideas. We also use children's literature to teach comprehension, composition, and other language arts concepts. The students love the new curriculum and I have never seen them read more independently in all the years I've been teaching. We need more classroom texts to support this curriculum and further the students' love of reading in school and at home. Please help my students become strong readers so that they may contribute positively to society as adults.
