The make-up of the students at my school consists of about: 17% African American, 34% Hispanic, 40% white; 67% Economically disadvantaged and 40% classified as homeless. Even though the majority of students at my school have a very rough and hard home life, when they see that a teacher/mentor cares about them and will go the distance for them, they respond amazingly! Our teachers care about the students and it shows. We have over 80% of our students passing the state mandated academic standardized test. In my class, the students, as a whole, work good together in cooperative groups to brainstorm, create, and carry out projects in class. I feel it is important for them to learn to push past their differences, whether they are racial or economical, and learn to work together to complete a project.
