I truly believe that books have the power to bring families and communities together and to develop literacy skills in students at the same time. I would like to start a family reading program at my school to encourage families to read together and to also bring the families at my school together to develop a sense of community. I have chosen a book that I would like all the third grade families at my school to read together at home. This book comes highly recommended by school librarians and it also made Focus on the Families List of 100 books to read to children. This book celebrates differences and teaches children compassion. According to the educational website Brightly, "It is important for families to share books because it allows families to discuss how you can find courage, inspiration and unexpected solutions to problems through the journeys of the heroes in the stories. " After the book has been read at home I will invite the families into the school library for a fun evening to discuss the book. I will provide dinner and will have various activities relating to the book set up around the library. I hope that this fun evening motivates families to continue to read at home every night and also brings the families of our school together.
