I teach 6th grade math, science, and health. The neighborhood is high poverty, and many students experience a lot of trauma in their homes, whether through neglect, violence, addiction, or other hardships. For many students in my classroom, school is the safest place in their lives, and we work hard to give them the best possible experience when they are here. This means that not only are we teaching our subjects, but we are often teaching students about life choices, life skills, communication techniques, problem-solving strategies, and even diet and hygiene. These students are amazingly intelligent and hard-working kids. They make me smile and laugh on a daily basis. They love and support each other through everything. They deserve the absolute best from their lives, and I want to do everything in my power to give them this.
