When we started Emergency Learning last Spring, I realized that small groups would be the best way to teach the last two key concepts of Kindergarten. I was able to focus on each student, and my students continued to make great growth. When Distance Learning became the reality for this new school year, I again committed to small group sessions, with each student meeting with me in three small sessions throughout the day. Even with a small group setting, it is quite difficult to see the details I need to see to ensure that these newest learners are truly understanding the concepts and skills being presented. I struggle to see if they formed a letter correctly. I struggle to see the counting path they are following to count their beans accurately. Since students usually have to be muted to reduce background noise, I struggle to see if each mouth is in the right shape to make the correct letter sound, especially with students who have poor internet connections. A bigger, clearer monitor will make all the difference. I will be able to see each student as they work, as they respond. I will not waste any more time asking students to bring the paper closer to the camera as I lean in and squint at my screen. I will be able to quickly check student progress and move on to the next part of the lesson. Our time is so limited under the Distance Learning model. I can't wait until this new monitor eliminates the little bits of wasted time that add up to teaching opportunities lost!
