Reading opens up a whole new world for students. They can travel anywhere, and become anyone they choose without having to leave the comfort of their chair. In addition, educational research shows that students who perform best in school are those who read the most. The Lunch Bunch Book Club can help my students get excited about new high-quality fiction, and share that excitement with others. The books our club will be reading are the Virginia Readers' Choice selections for 2016-2017; books selected as being particularly noteworthy in the field of children’s/young adult literature. Some of the titles include The Fourteenth Goldfish, The Map Trap, and Mr. Ferris and His Wheel. After the Lunch Bunch reads the books and discusses the merits of each, the students will be able to cast a vote for their favorite. In addition to getting to read high-quality novels, the students who take part in the Lunch Bunch will experience what it feels like to take control of their own learning, and to participate in a learning community outside the classroom environment. These are skills which will benefit them throughout their lives.
