The middle school is where students start to make choices. If they liked singing, they would take chorus. If they like to play an instrument (and can afford it), they take band. But what about the other 70 % of the student population? They end up in general music, a class that is often at the bottom of their "wish" list, and they have to take it every year. My students want to create music, but the good instruments are in the band room. Our basket of rhythm instruments sadly reflects the lack of attention paid to this large group over the years and would better serve a kindergarten or first grade class. What little money allocated to the music department goes to the band and chorus programs. Anything for my classroom is either left over, broken or replaced out of my pocket.
