MOVES (Movement Opportunities for Very Exceptional Students) was born for a desire to bring dance to all students, even those with challenges. I teach children with special needs, aged 4 to 16, in a creative movement class in SC. We have partnered with local high school and college students(members of a chapter of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts and Dance Education programs, respectively) to provide one-on-one assistance as dance buddies. This allows all students the ability to dance and experience their bodies in space, even if they have difficulties moving. Although we focus on creative movement, we include elements of ballet technique so that the students are gaining a skill set that can be used throughout their life.
