My class is comprised twenty-seven African American children between nine and ten years old. Some come from the poorest parts of Inglewood, CA where gang activity and violence are common occurrences. 90% live in poverty. Despite those circumstances, they show up everyday, wide-eyed and wanting to learn. They are curious and excited and filled with dreams and hopes. I have taught for twenty-four years in this school and love it today more than ever. We are a kindergarten through eighth grade school in the city of Inglewood in Southern California. An overwhelming majority of our student come from single parent homes and low-income families.
