California is a state of incredible wealth and innovation, but also a hotbed of schools suffering from the achievement gap, partially because many of these schools lack the technology resources to diversify their instructional strategies in response to students who have grown up in a digital world. Most of these students have not learned how to learn constructively through media and use media professionally. I teach 9th and 10th grade English, and at my school, it is a challenge to incorporate Internet research, video footage, and just basic computer literacy into my classroom. While the school is in a nice part of town and is considered one of the best public high schools in the city, its hidden shame is a gaping achievement gap. Minority students and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds do not perform well at this school, due to issues such as a lifetime of inadequate education and truancy.
