“Activate Your Mind! Express Your View! Participate in Your World!” is our battle cry in ninth grade Media Literacy. The class, made up of a special “cadre” of high risk students, is learning to “read” the media in order to decode the messages that shape their world far more than they realize. These students, attending a high-need, freshman only school in rural Louisiana, have been identified as high risk for dropping out because of low test scores, poor academic achievement, and often lack of parental support. A newly piloted Media Literacy elective is empowering these students to become proactive in acknowledging and confronting the subtle influences bombarding them through our media saturated culture. The skills learned in this course enable students to take responsibility for how they respond to the influences in their lives in order to become active, thinking participants as citizens of a democracy.
