I am a special education teacher in an inner city school district. I currently have ten students in my classroom with severe disabilities ranging from Autism to severe cognitive delays. I teach an intensive learning environment. My students are learning how to communicate with others in the classroom. We currently use picture schedules, picture boards, and gestures to help the students communicate with each other in various settings such as the classroom , lunch, art, gym, and music. Each of my students has an Individualized Education Plan with specific academic and behavior goals. The students have displayed many behaviors that have resulted in their severe delays in verbal communication. Recent studies shown that using an IPad with instruction greatly increases academic and communication skills with students with autism and students with severe cognitive delays.
