Returning to school post-pandemic has been a challenging adjustment for many of our students with increased demands socially and educationally. Many of my kiddos are really struggling with the demands of just sitting at their desk. When the lockdowns for the pandemic began, our current kindergarteners were only 3 years old and did not have the opportunities to be exposed to structured social interactions beyond those existing within their homes. Our current 2nd graders were only 5 years old at the start of the pandemic. After almost two full years of learning at home or in small hybrid classroom settings, students had to return to school to full-size classrooms with demands of learning and social interaction they were not prepared to meet. Currently, to help these students get the movement they need to regulate their systems, they are taking walks outside the classroom and doing exercises in the hallways, missing out on valuable learning time with their peers and friends in their classroom. These adaptive seating options will allow children to remain in their classroom with their peers and friends to learn while getting the calming movement their young bodies and brains need. The adapted seating will support the educational and developmental needs of the students while they transition back to full-time in-person education and can be utilized for years to come to meet the needs of future students.
