"Literacy is the vaccine for poverty," according to Dr. Stephen Peters. My school is in a low-income area with a lot of refugees from other countries who struggle with English. A lot of my students barely have access to the school library during the day, let alone access to books on their own. I do what I can with my own collection and funds, but a lot of the affordable books I can find are too difficult, old, or just uninteresting to my students, many of whom read below grade level.
