Students at my school come from low socio-economic backgrounds. We are a Title I school with 92% of students on free or reduced lunch. All students in my room are special needs students with intensive reading, writing, and mathematical deficits. At minimum, they are two years behind in one or all academic areas. Although on paper my classroom is a self contained Mild/Moderate room serving grades 4th-5th, I teach students with a wide range or emotional, behavioral, and academic needs. Reading and writing levels in my classroom run from from Pre-K to 3rd grade according to data. With all that said, students in my room want to learn. They want to be able to read and write like their peers. They have ambitions and goals and want to be less dependent on someone else to be successful. Right now, they rely on me to spell words and read all text. I am not only their teacher, but their assistive technology device! They are great kids and deserve the opportunity to succeed!
