My school is nestled in the mountains of western North Carolina. In our town, there is live music everywhere! You can hear music in restaurants, at community festivals, and even any night on the streets of downtown. Much of our local music is performed with string instruments - guitar, fiddle, dulcimer, mandolin, ukulele or banjo. In my classroom, I have many percussion instruments my students use when learning to read music, but no string instruments. Almost all of our classroom instruments are rhythmic, which makes playing melodies and chords on instruments difficult. With a classroom set of ukuleles, my students can greatly expand their music knowledge and ability. My students LOVE music and are excited for any new musical challenge handed to them, especially when holding instruments! I purchased one ukulele for my school and my students lit up with excitement. They all know about the instrument and are looking forward to learning how to play them. All of my students from kindergarten through 5th grade will get to learn new skills with this wonderful instrument.
