I work in a low income school in which our students come with very limited vocabulary and exposure to reading and books. My school, this past year, has committed to helping our students succeed and have more exposure to reading. We have started our classroom libraries but have limited books at this time. We will continue to add books as we go to help our students become independent readers and problem solvers. Even with the limited resources that we had this past year I saw how they loved to grab a book and just sit around the class and read books to their friends. These are students that don't have books at home and many are never read to either. Being Kindergartners some started by only retelling the story by using the pictures, moving on to finding sight words, and finally becoming independent readers.
