Camden has been voted the “Most Dangerous” and “Poorest” city in the United States consistently in the last 30 years. The school district has been branded: Abbott, Title 1, Failing, Dangerous, Under Performing, etc. Every day my students are characterized by politicians, news outlets, and the world as unremarkable or just tragic victims of their environment. These cruel labels are not actual descriptions of my students or their ability. My students are hardworking, energetic, inquisitive, and zealous for knowledge. They are young leaders who fight for their education.
100% of the eager students in my school receive free breakfast and lunch. Most of my students enter my kindergarten class without knowing their letters and how to write their name. Their thirst to learn drives each student to grow beyond a year’s growth in the ten months I work with them.
