As I move into a classroom that is currently not set up to be a classroom, I am working toward creating a warm and inviting space for students that allows them the opportunity to get comfortable while learning. I will be moving from teaching 5th grade math to teaching 4th grade reading and writing and I am trying to foster a love for this content by allowing students flexibility in how they occupy the space in the room. One of my main goals in this next year is to create more opportunities for student movement within our school day and allow for my students to be more autonomous. For example, I will be implementing a Reader's/Writer's Workshop that will focus on the Daily 5. Students will transition through Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, Word Work, and Listen to Reading. The flexible and comfortable learning environment I will provide with these materials will empower students to take control of their own learning. Through this personalized approach, I not only hope to lower instances of behavior management but really develop strong and disciplined students of character. The first six years of my career have been ones of transience. I have finally found a building to call home and I am looking to acquire materials that will live in my room for many years. Please foster my creativity and in turn the creativity of my littles by helping to purchase a space that will light up their young and impressionable minds. Not only will these materials provide for flexibility but also an opportunity for personalization. I want my students to know they belong and will be using these materials to foster that feeling of love and comfort.
