My students are a lot like me as a child, 83% of my third graders come from Spanish only speaking households, where English is only heard when flipping through the channels until Univision is reached, or when turning the radio dial. 95% of my third graders receive free lunch, 5% receive reduced lunch. Many of my students come from loving immigrant homes, where parents are filled with high hopes and aspirations for their children, despite their own low levels of education. Moving beyond the barrio seems impossible. Thus, many of these children come to school with very limited conversational English, and little to no academic English. William Temple once said, " The most influential of all educational factors is the child's conversation in a child's home." As a teacher it is my responsibility to teach student academic English. This is a daunting, yet achievable task. These non-fiction informational books will be another avenue through which students will be exposed to academic English.
