Several students are high poverty students who have little access to reading material at home and do not go often to the public library. Most students are on the free and reduced-price lunch program. Some, not all, parents are busy trying to support the family and take care of multiple responsibilities and are not in a situation were there is time to read with their child. Students sometimes do not have the opportunity to develop proper listening skills. Without the ability to listen well they have little chance of being successful in school. Students need multiple opportunities to learn listening skills while enjoying books. The more these children can hear and experience proper language and interact with text the better chance they have of becoming fluent readers and writers and enjoying the many experiences that books can open for them.
