We started an SEL garden last year. These tools will be used there to support learning about our world and ourselves. The weather is an ever-changing part of everyone's life. Science is real so using tools to learn will enable students to see, hear, and feel the world around them. Science comes alive in the classroom and outside for each student using these tools and science materials. Learning to read and use thermometers to understand the temperatures inside and outside the classroom and at home will allow kids to make real-world discoveries. Using a barometer, wind vane, anemometer, and rain gauge open up new skills in collecting data, looking for patterns, and understanding how weather changes affect us all. Observing and collecting data on growing ladybugs while seeing eggs hatch and change right before students' eyes makes science real to each child. Individualized Hands-on learning that this project enables will ensure students gain opportunities to open up their minds to see a world of possibilities most of my students did not even know was possible much less available and achievable for them.
