My students need to move and fidget and have difficulty focusing for extended periods of time in traditional desks. My students are eager to learn and crave success, but they need an environment conducive to their physical and emotional needs. My goal is always to provide students with an inclusive classroom environment which supports their unique learning styles, individual differences and sensory needs. Students are all working at different reading levels and on different goals, including social emotional goals and task/time management skills. Students are learning to self-regulate and learning what works best for them as learners. My students do not have many opportunities for choices, burning energy or movement in general and this often leads to off task behaviors simply because of their difficulty within the environment. Station teaching allows me the opportunity to use a variety of teaching methods while working with small groups. Students typically rotate every 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the task and will be self-directed with the exception of the teacher led station. Some tasks will involve technology and others will demand listening skills. In a reading station, for example, where they are expected to listen to an audiobook and summarize afterwards, their time on task will be automatically be increased simply by having a bean bag chair or swivel stool. In the writing station, they are expected to work on computers on specific skills, providing them the flexible stool seating will provide. The research suggests that physical activity of any type is linked to higher academic performance, improved behaviors and overall better health. My goal is to provide these opportunities to my students simply by giving them ownership of their learning and their seating choices. Please empower them by providing a classroom that will help to meet their needs.
