The microscopic universe is amazing for students to be able to encounter. This year due to COVID, they were unable to work with microscopes due to the time needed to sanitize between classes. While digital slides are useful, they fail to engage the student with the sense of wonder they get when looking at water they collected near their own home. My students are obsessed with water bears. Call them moss piglets or Tardigrades, when students were learning about the characteristics of life they all focused on these microorganisms when coming up with their definitions. When I explained they can be found on the moss outside they became even more excited to see one. The microscope, adaptors, and slides will enable students to observe our new classroom pet, take pictures, and also learn the basics of microscope use without having to look through the eyepiece. Virtual students will be able to see these organisms presented on the screen. In future years as we move back to individual microscopes, this setup will serve as a central focus in the class, able to be used as students make observations on their own slides and then present their findings to the class.
