My students are mostly children of immigrants. They come from Mexico, Central and South American, Africa, and parts of Asia. Some speak English well but for most English is a second language. I teach sixth grade math. This grade is a transitional year for students in general. For my students this transition can be difficult largely due to the culture shock and lack of parental involvement. Immigrant parents work odd hours and sometimes more than one job so they are sometimes unable to be a good support. Thus, behavior is a problem for some. This is actually the best school that I have worked in during my tenure! I have always worked with inner city youth but this by far is my favorite. My school has a warm and intelligent staff that have come together to create a bond with one another and their students.
