We are a Title-1 school with 96% of our students coming from low-income families. All students are offered breakfast, lunch and dinner. Our students also come from very diverse backgrounds with 32% of our population being Hispanic and coming to us with limited English Oral Language. Our school is located in a high crime neighborhood within our city and is truly a safe haven for most of our students. I provide reading intervention to fifty-three students in kindergarten and first grade. My goal is to have these students reading at, or above, grade level by the end of the year. My students desperately want to be able to read and crave to have access to leveled books. However, a MAJOR obstacle for me is that I do not have nearly the quantity of emergent level (Levels A-D) books needed to meet their needs. At the beginning of next year I plan to implement a "100 Book Challenge Club" as an incentive for my struggling readers. Currently, I don't have nearly enough emergent level books to implement this initiative. It is my desire to develop in my students a lifelong love for reading which, in turn, will open new opportunities for bettering their lives.
