Our school is an urban high poverty school. Majority of my students are ESOL students, which means that English is not their first language. These students come from anywhere, and can be on any level. Although this can make things very challenging for the students and staff, we never use this as an excuse to fail. ESOL students are not only being taught the content and standards, but how to live in a new place, speak a new language, and become immersed in a new culture. The students know that they are supported at the school, and this is one of the main reasons the school has been succeeding. In my first grade classroom, some of the students are level 1 ESOL which means they have very little English Language Development. The students are at a Kindergarten level with their reading, writing, and math. We work daily as a team to keep them moving forward with these important content areas. We want all of our students to become readers and writers both in and out of the classroom.
