The use of scholastic readers is almost a daily activity in my classroom, especially during small groups. Using the reading comprehension skills, students will work in small groups to identify weekly comprehension strategies, as well as identify elements of certain genres. With Scholastic News, students will work in small groups to practice fluency, practice comprehension strategies, and apply reading foundational skills. By having individual scholastic readers, students will be able to apply and identify comprehension skills on a consumable reading piece. Students will also be given an opportunity to practice their speaking/listening skills when sharing out ideas. For those students who struggle, this will give them an opportunity to hear their classmates thinking and eventually apply these skills on their own.
