The majority of my students read below grade level. With middle school on the horizon they have recently begun to focus on self- improvement. I have been able to engage them in reading through novel studies. Actually, they love novel studies, especially when they get to hold and read their own copy of the book. They have shown marked improvement in reading comprehension as we have been exploring characters in different times and places. My students come from a very low socioeconomic school. Most students are on free lunch. Many of my students have challenging lives and come to school for stability. They are really great kids with kind hearts.
