I have found that the desks cause a distraction for the students. They play around inside the desks causing them to lose focus and effectively complete their work. I wanted to find a way to help them turn that around. I tried borrowing tables from other teachers to experiment with the students using tables to sit at just like in Kindergarten. I found that the students were more focused and on task as there were fewer distractions for the students. They were able to get up and move more frequently then normal since they had to retrieve their books for lessons from their cubbies. Pencils and crayons were kept on the table as community supplies. Behaviors also improved with this type of seating. Since it proved such a success, I look forward to using tables in the classroom again this year!
